My research, particularly on tax policy, has contributed to the public debate and/or attracted interest from the media. I try to make myself available to the media for commentary, so feel free to get in touch. This page lists some recent contributions.
Oireachtas Committees
I have been invited to Leinster House to address Oireachtas committess. Most notably, to Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation, and Taoiseach on “Proposed retail investment schemes and tax on deemed disposals.” A video recording is available here, and my opening statement can be downloaded here.
Radio
In May 2026. I was interviewed on RTÉ Radio 1’s Drivetime programme (listenership in excess of 200,000 people). The topic was “Economists concerned over Government savings scheme”. The link is available here.
Podcast
Thanks to the UCD Economics Society for featuring me on their Lessons with Leaders podcast; April 2026.
MacGill Summer School, Co. Donegal
I was delighted to participate in the annual MacGill Summer School in July 2024. I was invited to share my views on “How Ireland Should Spend Its Billions”.
Reflecting a perspective that the international consensus is fragmenting before our eyes, the 2024 theme was “On the brink”. I gave a short lecture on the economics of risk and uncertainty, and teased out the implications of a Rawlsian framework for intertemporal choice.
ISWE Budget 2025 Event
Economics is a male-dominated discipline. The Irish Society for Women in Economics is a fantastic initiative from the Irish Economics Association to e.g. encourage more women to study the subject. Needless to say, promoting gender equality does not mean excluding men. Rather, it means making the environment less hostile/more welcoming to women. This is the subject where a leading textbook once lumped “women and cranks” together, after all.
One approach ISWE uses is hosting panels discussing the issues of the day. In October, I was invited to provide analysis on the fiscal changes announced in Budget 2025. I donned my optimal taxation hat and proposed alternative policies that would upset just about every party in the Dáil.
